Plastic surgery is operations performed both to change the appearance of people and to reconstruct the defects that occur in the face and body due to the effect of adverse events such as illness or trauma. The purpose of plastic surgery, which can be applied to both men and women, is to make people feel more beautiful and have a more positive mood.
That plastic surgery includes the word “plastic”, many people think that the patient’s face becomes artificial or fake after operations, which is actually not accurate. The word plastic is taken from the Greek word plasticos, which means to shape or mold. In this regard, plastic surgery is not only an aesthetic change, but also applied to improve dysfunctional body parts.
Plastic surgery is divided into two classes depending on whether it is done to change the appearance and functions of the person. These are reconstructive or cosmetic (also known as aesthetic) surgery.
Reconstructive plastic surgery corrects defects in the face or body with the aim of restoring function. Physical defects such as cleft lip, ear deformities, traumatic injuries caused by burns or reconstructing a woman’s breast as a result of breast cancer can be treated with reconstructive plastic surgery. Although reconstructive plastic operations are primarily used to restore function, they can alter the patient’s appearance.
Cosmetic surgery, on the other hand, is a procedure that aims to change the part of the body that the patient is not satisfied with and bring the appearance to the desired state. Cosmetic procedures are more concerned with beauty and aesthetic concerns. Commonly known cosmetic procedures include surgeries such as rhinoplasty, breast enlargement or reduction, gynecomastia, fat removal from a certain area of the body, tummy tuck, face lift. These operations can be performed to replace a single part that the patient is not satisfied with, or they can be performed in combination when deemed appropriate. For this, the patient and the doctor should come together and make the right decision.
Plastic surgery covers a very wide area such as restoring functions and making the appearance desired by the patient. In some cases, aesthetic concerns may be related to medical problems other than beauty. For example, in operations such as rhinoplasty (nose aesthetics), breathing problems can be solved besides changing the appearance of the nose.
Individuals who are considering plastic surgery are serious in their decisions should first talk to the people around them for ideas and support, and then meet with a plastic surgeon to get information about the process involved in the operation. After learning more about the process, he should decide on the most appropriate step according to the expectation and possible results.
